Life is like a tennis match...

"The man who said "I'd rather be lucky than good" saw deeply into life. People are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It's scary to think so much is out of one's control. There are moments in a match when the ball hits the top of the net, and for a split second, it can either go forward or fall back. With a little luck, it goes forward, and you win. Or maybe it doesn't, and you lose. "

Above is the opening quote to Match Point. A quote that I 100% agree with.
You definitely need luck in life.

If you've been following me on Twitter, you'd know all I've been doing lately is watching tennis and watching movies about tennis. I recently watched Match Point, directed by one of my favorite directors Woody Allen who also directed the newly released Midnight In Paris which premiered at Cannes. I saw that in theatres Saturday night and thought it was fantastic. If you're not doing anything on this memorial day (happy memorial day!) I highly suggest you watch it!

I like U 2 Spiderman

Seeing U2's Bono last night performing on American Idol (yes, I watched the finale!) with Broadway's Spiderman star Reeve Carney (who's crazy good looking) sparked me to revisit some of my favorite U2 songs...They're sooo good, I'm sorry, but they really, really are.

Magnificent, one of their most recent songs

Beautiful Day, classic. This video gives me goosebumps every time.

And here's last night's performance on American Idol.
Skip to 0:53 and tell me Spiderman's not trying to entice you...

I'm in love with Spiderman.

Reeve Carney on Broadway

One of the most famous O.C. scenes with Seth Cohen (Adam Brody)

Andrew Garfield (a.k.a. Eduardo) as Spiderman

3,000!!! [Craziest post ever]

In honor of reaching 3,000 views, here's
"Year 3,000" by Busted, not the Jonas Brothers!

This summer, besides traveling, I plan on doing many activities and pursuing many passions that I've set aside over the year. I've had to dedicate a lot of my freedom this year to school work and chores. I'm sure many of you feel the same way. I can guiltily admit I haven't read one full book from cover to cover that I've actually wanted to read over these past couple of months. All the books I've read this year have either been required for school or textbook readings which, as we all know, are awful! I can't wait to spend entire days lying on the beach, or going from cafe to cafe, or even entire days in bed (those are necessary!)

Polaroid pictures.
I have to admit, I'm fascinated. Yes, their time already came and left when "hipster" was the cool new thing, but now that that time has passed (it never really went away did it?) I can willingly admit I am intrigued by the whole polaroid camera trend. I own one, and after an entire year of it living in my drawer I'm going to introduce it to the great outdoors. Now I just have to find the right film for it, I predict hours on ebay.

Montreux Sundance Festival vs. ACT Test

It's 5 o'c lock in the morning and all I can think about is how I'll be taking a 4 hour standardized test while this happens.

For more information on what looks like an unforgettable four days in Switzerland, filled with the best DJ's in the world click here

Here's my favorite DJ, Avicii at Electric Zoo Festival 2010.
I was in the audience when he played this and it was amazing --- unbelievable.

#ShoutOut to my friend Emily who experienced these amazing 24 hours with me! Definitely one of the best weekends in my life!

Here's the song from the video: Imogen Heap's "Hide And Seek" remixed by Avicii

Enjoy, and if you're anywhere near Switzerland June 9-12, I highly suggest you stop by Montreux Sundance Festival because as you can see, the lineup looks epic.

Kate EspaDrilled the new shoe craze

Dearest Kate,
Thank you for causing the shoe world to go espadrille crazy. Ever since your first walk as a royal, women have been obsessing about walking in your shoes, literally.I haven't seen more rope soles since walking down the boardwalk in Saint Tropez, and that's because Castañer (click for the best espadrilles in the world) was having a sale. But seriously Kate, next time you wear shoes in public can you think about the impact it might have on every women's store in the world? This espadrille obsession is getting a bit out of foot (hehehe, I said foot instead of hand.) Don't get me wrong I think the combination of a wedge, some rope and fabric make a perfect summer staple item, but before this shoe trend surpasses the gladiator craze of 2010, someone needs to make some ground rules. I'm not saying I know what's best for rope soled shoes but I think it's in their best interest to stay away from the slippery floors of suburban malls.

All the best from the land of suburban malls,
Espadrille Lover circa 1999

My favorite athlete in the whole world

I've completely forgotten to show you a big part of my life:

His name is Novak Djokovic (pronounced Joke-Oh-Vich)
He is the number 2 best tennis player in the world
He currently has a winning streak of 38-0
&
It's his birthday today!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NOVAK DJOKOVIC
Here are some pictures of when I saw him play at the US OPEN in September,
where he reached the finals for the second time!

SO close to him

Flashin' the pearly whites

Being a fan of any sport, you probably understand how I felt when I saw my favorite tennis player of all time play LIVE!
Thankfully, he won easily (3 sets to love against James Blake!) all thanks to my cheering of course!

If he looks familiar, it's probably because he makes quite the number of appearances:

He's quite the Djoker...

He even made an appearance in Martin Solveig's "Hello" music video at 2:35!
Which if I may add, is insanely overplayed at the moment.

If tennis doesn't work out, he's always got a singing career!

Today is also the start of the second grand slam of the year,
the Roland Garros in Paris, France.

I will be watching Novak every step of the way
I highly suggest you avoid my tweets for the next two weeks!

I also realized: I have exactly 4 weeks until I leave for Bali!

Recap:
School is pretty much over,
Tennis season is reaching it's climax,
Summer shopping is in full swing,
&
In a month I'll be in paradise...

Looking forward to seeing you

All this Cannes film festival hype is making me curious about all the new movies coming out this year. I've been youtube-ing a bunch of trailers lately and so far these are the ones that I found particularly interesting. They all have famous Hollywood actors in them but that's not why I like them, based on their trailers, they actually seem different and have new plot lines.
Can't wait until they come out!

Midnight In Paris

This is the newest film by Woody Allen, one of my favorite directors. After filming Vicky Cristina Barcelona in Barcelona and You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger in London, Mr.Allen went to the city of Paris to shoot this film. Again the cinematography itself is already enough to see it, but with a cast featuring Hollywood actress Rachel McAdams, La Vie En Rose's Marion Cotillard and France's first lady Carla Bruni, Midnight in Paris is officially a must-see.

Melancholia

Okay, maybe this looks a little bit strange. But Kirsten Dunst and French fashion icon Charlotte Gainsbourg seem like an interesting pair. The story itself does seem very offbeat but the cinematography looks really interesting. And the scene at 01:16 when Kirsten is floating in the water looks like it was based off of a Raphaelite painting...

Is it weird that I really like this?

Waiting For Forever

Rachel Bilson + Tom Sturridge = ROMCOM HEAVEN
Nothing more to say.

Balenciaga-gaga

I'm not materialistic...

You just don't understand...

It's my DREAM bag...

:)

It's like my very own royal wedding...
with a bag as my very own prince.
Okay, that's a bit sad...

No, it's true, I'm in love!

Apparently, you are getting sneaky!

As much as I'd like to say "I told you so," since I did announce my love for Superga sneakers before they became dubbed the "Sneaker of the Summer," I have to give full credit towards my mother who introduced me to the Italian brand before I could even walk.

For the full article click

Truth be told, Superga sneakers have been around for a while, so their sudden popularity is probably all thanks to the face of their brand, Alexa Chung (who I'm obsessed with.)
I don't care how indie/alternative/urban outfitters-wannabe these advertisements try to be, I think there's something very feminine about them and they're successful in making you want to be just like Alexa, or maybe it's just Alexa. Either way, it's official,
GET SOME Supergas!

Apologies

I'm sorry I haven't updated in a while, it's been that time where I take a little break from the internet. I tend to do that sometimes and stupidly apologize for it as I am doing. I haven't updated Sophiesmonde or tweeted at all lately because after exams finished, I just didn't feel like doing anything but sleep, eat and spend time with my family and friends.
Lately, while doing absolutely nothing, I have been doing a lot of thinking. Thinking about choices, options and decisions and whether I'm choosing the right choices, opting for the right options and deciding the right decisions. CLARIFICATION: This isn't me caving into teenage self-discovery, I am merely exclaiming my worry for the future. Aside from thinking, I've been doing a lot of complaining lately and realized that it's not taking me anywhere. There's a reason why I am here right now and instead of complaining, I should be enjoying this period of my life. Quite the epiphany? Not.
I'm just typing crap at this point.

Kate & Will

Well on another note: Royal Recap
KATE + WILL = SEYCHELLES

Yes, they finally left on their honeymoon!
and I can't wait to read all about it in Hello magazine!

Competition
From royalty to reality,
I'm thinking to enter this TeenVogue competition:

The prizes = life-changing

Summer Fashion

On another note, summer is literally right around the corner!
More apologies for not updating the "Item of the Day," I will make it up by posting three items for today!

Come back later for the Balenciaga-gaga post!

Movies & Music

If the song at the top of the post sounds familiar it's from the soundtrack of Amélie.
During the time that I was doing absolutely nothing, I was watching movies...
a lot of movies.

In the last week I watched movies that I've been meaning to see and re-watched movies that I can't live without, here's a list from #1 being my favorite and going down from there, of the movies I've recently watched.

1. Amélie (re-watched)
2. Pride and Prejudice (re-watched)
3. Never Let Me Go (watched for the first time)
4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall (re-watched)
5. Last Night (watched for the first time)
6. Something Borrowed (watched for the first time)
7. No Strings Attached (watched for the first time)

Seven movies later and I'm still lying on my bed at noon on a Monday. I should probably do something useful or pretend to do something useful...

Should the monde focus on the closet?

So, after seeking advice and consideration,
sophiesmonde is caught in a sophiedilemma.

Some of you have been telling me to focus sophiesmonde.com on clothes more, while others have been telling me that focusing on clothes makes me look a tad materialistic!

I've decided to post some pictures of my closet for you to decide whether it's worth focusing more attention on:

What

Do

You

Think

I should

Do?

PS. THE NEXT POST WILL HAVE ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING TO DO WITH BALENCIAGA.

Mother's Day

...even though my mother likes to remind me, everyday is Mother's Day

I'll always remember listening to this song while driving through the hills and vineyards of the south of France. I love the feeling when you hear a song, no matter how old it is, and it reminds you of a certain moment and you can remember everything about it perfectly. I vividly remember forcing my mother, father and brother to listen to the new Spice Girls CD on that 12 hour drive to the Provence in summer of 2002.

I remember the distinct provencal lavender smell and my mother obsessing over how she wished she could bottle it up and make it into a perfume.

Mama by the Spice Girls

My brother and I got my mother the perfume Eau So Fresh by Marc Jacobs. I originally wanted to get her the new Balenciaga body lotion --- (it was sold out!) but anyway Eau So Fresh made a much better gift and the bottle is beautiful!

Pretty much everything by Marc Jacobs is spectacular.

Take a look at this video I found of some London taxis that are decorated to advertise Eau So Fresh!
I would die to be in one of them. I also just enjoy this video and it makes me wish I was in London even more!

BUT
Mother's Day isn't only about gifts...

Haha, it's also a day that you prove to your mother that
you are capable of making more than just pasta!

Wherever you are in the world,
Have a marvelous mother's day!

Even if you and your mother don't get along and you cannot stand the sound of your mother's voice, at the end of the day, your mother will always be your best friend. I know for a fact, I wouldn't know half the things that I know or be half the person that I am today without my mother...Would you?
